The first 20×20

The Gulf at Pass Christian, Mississippi.  Friday, January 6.

And the first plate:

The goal had been simply to see if we could make a big tintype using a pinhole camera.  It hadn’t been done before.  We weren’t altogether convinced that we could do it.  But that didn’t slow us down.  It didn’t keep us from trying.  There was no downside risk.

So of course we were thrilled to see the image come up in the darkroom.  Dancing thrilled.  The surprise, the serendipity, the totally unexpected prize was the image itself.  The painterliness.  It’s like the thing had just painted itself.
